Filling Surveys on Mobile

Comprehensive guide to starting, navigating, answering, reviewing, and submitting questionnaires in the MQUAD mobile app.

The MQUAD form engine provides an intuitive, high-speed survey filling interface optimized for enumerators in the field. It fully supports standard XLSForm/ODK semantics, multi-language switching mid-survey, dynamic logic, and multimedia capture.

1. Starting a Survey

  1. Tap the Forms icon in the bottom navigation bar.
  2. Browse your assigned surveys under the Available tab. You can search by survey title or filter by project.
  3. Tap on the desired survey card to open the Survey Detail screen.
  4. Review the survey metadata (title, version ID, description, required attachments).
  5. Tap Start Form:
    • Start Fresh: Initiates a clean, new response instance with a unique local response identifier (RID).
    • Resume Draft: If you have an existing unfinished interview, you will be prompted to continue from where you left off.

2. Navigating the Questionnaire

MQUAD displays questions in a clean, one-question-per-screen layout (or group-level page when defined by the survey designer).

  • Swipe Gestures: Swipe left to proceed to the next question; swipe right to return to the previous question.
  • Navigation Buttons: Use the Previous and Next buttons in the bottom bar.
  • Question Navigator: Tap the question indicator (e.g. Question 12 of 45) in the top app bar to open the quick-jump question grid.
  • Table of Contents (Drawer): Open the left drawer to see the entire survey hierarchy, section groupings, completion status of each section, and jump directly to any question.
  • Bookmarks: Tap the bookmark icon on any question to flag it for later review during the interview.

4. Typography & Emphasis (Bold Formatting)

In MQUAD, all question text is presented in a normal font weight by default. When survey authors include HTML emphasis tags such as <b> or <strong> (for example: "What was the primary source of household drinking water?"), the bolded text stands out with maximum contrast.

Additional inline HTML tags supported:

  • <i> and <em> for italics
  • <u> for underline
  • <span style="color: ..."> for custom colored warning text
  • <br> for line breaks

5. Audio Prompts & Text-to-Speech (TTS)

Every question includes an integrated speaker button:

  • Recorded Human Audio: If the survey author uploaded pre-recorded native audio clips for the question in the active language, tapping the speaker button plays the human studio recording.
  • System TTS Fallback: If human audio is not provided, MQUAD automatically falls back to the device's Text-to-Speech engine in the active language.

6. Repeating Groups (begin_repeat)

Surveys frequently collect rosters (such as listing all members of a household, agricultural plots, or child health records):

  • Adding Iterations: Tap Add Member (or the custom label defined by the survey).
  • Iteration Switching: Navigate between iterations using numbered tabs or carousel cards.
  • Removing Iterations: Delete an invalid entry with confirmation.
  • Repeat Counts: If controlled by a preceding question (e.g. "How many people live here?"), MQUAD automatically generates the exact number of iterations required.

7. Dynamic Skip Logic & Calculations

  • Relevance Rules (Skip Logic): Questions automatically appear or disappear instantly based on your answers to preceding questions. Irrelevant questions are automatically cleared.
  • Dynamic Calculations: The on-device calculation engine continuously evaluates formulas, totals, age calculations, and score aggregations in real time.
  • Constraint Messages: If an entered answer violates a validation rule (e.g. age must be between 18 and 65), an inline error appears with the author's custom message.

8. Switching Languages Mid-Form

If a respondent prefers a different language during the interview:

  1. Tap the Language Selector in the top bar.
  2. Choose from the available languages configured in the survey schema.
  3. All questions, choices, hints, and constraint messages update immediately while preserving all entered answers.

9. Auto-Save & Draft Resumption

  • Continuous Auto-Save: MQUAD automatically saves your answers to the encrypted local database every 5 seconds and on every page transition.
  • Accidental Exits: If the battery dies or the app is closed, you will not lose data.
  • Resume from Drafts: Reopen the app, tap the Drafts tab on the Home dashboard, tap the interview, and choose Resume Interview.

10. Review & Submission

When the final question is reached:

  1. Tap Review & Submit.
  2. The Pre-Submit Review screen presents a structured summary of all answered and skipped questions.
  3. Validation Errors: If any required questions were missed or constraints violated, they are highlighted in red. Tapping an error immediately jumps to that question.
  4. Correction Lock (G-AC4): When performing an administrative correction on a rejected submission, only the flagged fields are editable; all other approved fields remain securely locked.
  5. Tap Submit Response to finalize. The response is signed and queued for synchronization.
